WASHINGTON, D.C. – The FBI is turning up the heat in the search for a suspect responsible for planting two pipe bombs on Capitol Hill the night before the January 6th riot in Washington, DC. After four years of investigation, the bureau is releasing new video footage in hopes of cracking the case. Along with the release, the FBI is offering a $500,000 reward for anyone who can provide information leading to an arrest.
New Footage Reveals Key Details About Suspect’s Movements
On January 5, 2021, two pipe bombs were placed near the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and Republican National Committee (RNC) headquarters. The bombs were planted between 7:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. that evening.
New surveillance footage sheds light on the suspect’s actions during this time. In one clip, the individual is seen sitting on a park bench near the DNC headquarters, reaching into a backpack to place the first bomb. A second bomb was left near the RNC headquarters shortly afterward.
Investigation Timeline and Movements of the Suspect
The video begins at 7:34 p.m. when the suspect is seen at the intersection of First Street and North Carolina Avenue Southeast. From there, the individual walks southwest along North Carolina Avenue, turning north on New Jersey Avenue, then west on D Street, before finally heading south on South Capitol Street.
At one point, the suspect is observed setting the backpack down in front of a residence and stopping to adjust what appears to be a pair of glasses. A passerby with a dog walks by as the suspect picks up the backpack and begins walking back the way they came.
But the suspect doesn’t stop there—after reaching the corner of D Street, the individual retraces their steps, eventually stopping at a bench outside the DNC headquarters. At around 7:54 p.m., the suspect places the first bomb and leaves the bench.
Later, at 8:08 p.m., the video shows the suspect walking north on Second Street, between the RNC and the Capitol Hill Club. They then head to Rumsey Court, where the second bomb is placed at 8:16 p.m.
FBI Offers $500,000 Reward and Key Descriptions of the Suspect
In an effort to solve the case, the FBI is offering a $500,000 reward for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the suspect. Descriptions of the individual are now clearer thanks to the newly released footage.
The suspect is estimated to be 5 feet, 7 inches tall, wearing a face mask, a gray hooded sweatshirt, black gloves, and a backpack.
In addition to these details, the video also reveals the shoes worn by the suspect—distinctive Nike Air Max speed turf shoes in black and gray with a yellow Nike logo. The FBI notes that fewer than 25,000 pairs of these shoes were sold between August 2018 and January 2021, making them a valuable clue.
The Bombs and Their Danger
Although the pipe bombs did not detonate, they were constructed with the intent to cause harm. The devices used 60-minute kitchen timers as detonators, making them viable bombs that posed a significant danger to the public. Authorities are continuing to investigate and seek tips from the public to help bring the responsible individual to justice.
