The Birth of a Nebraska Folk Hero

OMAHA, NE – Febold Feboldson is a fascinating character in American folklore, known as a Swedish American plainsman and cloudbuster from Nebraska. While his exploits are often considered part of fakelore rather than genuine folk tales, the stories about Feboldson continue to captivate audiences.

The Birth of a Legend

Febold Feboldson’s adventures first appeared in 1923 in the Gothenburg Independent newspaper. The character was created by Wayne Caroll, a lumber salesman who used Feboldson to promote his business, much like Paul Bunyan.

However, due to the lack of trees on the Great Plains, Feboldson’s strength was depicted in other impressive ways. Caroll, along with Don Holmes, penned numerous tales between 1928 and 1933, showcasing Feboldson battling Native Americans, politicians, disease, and natural disasters.

Rise to Fame

In 1932, Paul Robert Beath published a story titled “Paul Bunyan and Febold” in the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s literary magazine, Prairie Schooner. This story, supposedly based on interviews with a descendant of Feboldson, helped cement his place in folklore. Beath continued to write about Feboldson, contributing to Nebraska’s rich literary traditions.

The Real-Life Inspiration

Nebraska folklorist Louise Pound and Paul Beath both noted that Feboldson was inspired by Olof Bergstrom, a prominent Swedish immigrant who helped settle Gothenburg, Nebraska.

Bergstrom’s larger-than-life persona and leadership in the community made him a fitting model for Feboldson. Despite his impressive contributions, Bergstrom was not without controversy, including an acquittal for a shooting incident that further added to his legendary status.

A Controversial Folk Hero

Beath argued that Feboldson was not a true folk hero but a creation for entertainment. He believed that each Feboldson story was shaped by the author’s imagination rather than traditional folklore. Louise Pound, however, saw Feboldson as a significant part of Nebraska’s literary lore, appealing more to educated lovers of stories than to the general public.
