MANORHAVEN, NY – A quiet night in Manorhaven, New York, turned into a nightmare early Wednesday as two boats went up in flames and sank at the Manhasset Bay Marina. The dramatic incident, which occurred in the dead of night amid freezing temperatures, sent shockwaves through the local community. A man was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries as crews battled to contain the blaze in an effort to prevent further damage.
Emergency Response in Freezing Conditions
At approximately 12:30 a.m., the Port Washington Fire Department responded to reports of a boat fire at the marina, which is located on Long Island. Temperatures had dipped into the single digits, adding to the difficulty of the situation. The flames had already spread across two vessels when Assistant Chief Patrick Saccoccia arrived at the scene.
Saccoccia confirmed that both a 43-foot Marine Trader yacht and a 42-foot Post boat were engulfed in flames at the far end of the marina. Firefighters, working through extreme cold, stretched two hose lines over 1,000 feet to tackle the fire. Despite their efforts, both boats were ultimately lost, sinking after the flames were extinguished around 2:15 a.m.
A Close Call for a Neighboring Boater
Amid the chaos, there were fears that someone might still be trapped on the first boat that caught fire. However, after thorough searches, no one was found. Unfortunately, a 58-year-old man aboard the second boat suffered smoke inhalation and burns. He was promptly taken to a nearby hospital by the Manhasset Ambulance for treatment.
Thankfully, no other injuries were reported. Local residents had witnessed the terrifying event unfold, and emergency teams quickly ensured that nearby boats and the marina’s dock were protected from the spreading flames.
Investigators Work to Determine Cause
As fire crews worked tirelessly to bring the situation under control, the Nassau County Fire Marshal launched an investigation into the cause of the fire.
With two boats lost and one person hurt, officials are racing against the clock to piece together what led to this fiery disaster.
