DAYTON, OH — A wave of concern is sweeping through households after Huffy issued a recall for more than 23,000 of its children’s electric Tonka Dump Trucks, citing serious fire and burn hazards linked to the truck’s overheating controller. The toy is made in suburban Dayton, Ohio.
Toy Trucks Spark Fire Fears
These battery-powered dump trucks, decked out in bold yellow and black with functioning LED headlights and a working dump bed, may look like a fun ride—but they come with hidden danger. Huffy revealed that the controller inside the truck can overheat, and in one reported case, even burst into flames, leaving the truck completely scorched. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported so far, but three overheating incidents have already been flagged.
Dates and Details Parents Need to Know
The recall targets models 17362 and 17323, sold under the Tonka name. The affected trucks were manufactured with date codes ranging from 15623 to 18724. This means any unit produced between June 5, 2023, and July 5, 2024, could be at risk. The code is printed on a label hidden under the body of the truck.
Sold Nationwide for Nearly $300
These ride-on toys were sold for about $300 and were available both in-store and online at Target and Sam’s Club from June 2023 through March 2025. The trucks are 45 inches long, 32 inches wide, and 24 inches tall—large enough for kids to ride, but now considered unsafe.
What Parents Should Do Now
Huffy is urging parents to stop using the trucks immediately and to reach out for a free replacement controller. The company says it’s already contacting known buyers directly to make sure no one is left unaware.
