WINONA, MN – A raging fire tore through the Minnesota Equestrian Center in Winona, Minnesota, last week, leaving a local family devastated and without a home during the holiday season. As the flames engulfed the building, firefighters battled for over eight hours to save what they could. Sadly, while the arena was saved, the family’s attached residence, along with a barn, were completely destroyed. The Motas—Jose, Bethany, and their two young children—fled their home early Thursday morning with nothing but the clothes on their backs.

The Motas Lose Everything in the Blaze

Jose Mota, the barn manager at the Minnesota Equestrian Center, and his family lost “absolutely everything” in the fire. The family lived in the residence attached to the horse facility, and when the flames broke out, they had no time to grab anything. The fire destroyed their home and belongings, leaving them with only the clothes they wore as they escaped.

While the family thankfully escaped unharmed, two horses and one cat perished in the blaze, marking a heartbreaking loss. Firefighters worked tirelessly through the night to prevent the fire from spreading further, and though the arena itself was spared, the Motas’ home and one of the barns were a total loss.

Fundraiser Gains Momentum to Help the Mota Family Rebuild

In the wake of the tragedy, a community fundraiser has rallied significant support to help the Motas get back on their feet. Within just a few days, the GoSendGo campaign has raised over $27,000, bringing the family close to their $30,000 goal. The fundraiser, organized by Missy Rivers, has become a symbol of our community’s compassion, as residents in Winona and beyond come together to help.

As the Motas begin to settle into a new home, the road ahead remains challenging. According to Rivers, while the family has a roof over their heads, they still need “just about everything to fill the house” — from basic furniture to kitchen utensils and bedroom supplies. This holiday season, the Motas’ needs are greater than ever, and the community’s generosity is crucial to helping them rebuild.
