NEWARK, NJ – A man was arrested on charges of assaulting a flight attendant during a June flight to New Jersey. The incident occurred aboard a United Airlines flight and ended with the man being restrained by passengers and crew members.
Flight Incident Leads to Arrest
The incident took place on June 12, 2024, during a United Airlines flight from Houston to Newark. According to court documents, Kedus Yacob Damtew, 38 of Washington, D.C., became disruptive as the flight was nearing Newark Liberty International Airport.
Damtew allegedly removed his shirt and pushed his bare chest into a flight attendant, pinning them against the aircraft’s exit door.
Witnesses report that Damtew was shouting epithets and making violent threats. In addition to the verbal abuse, he allegedly punched an aircraft oven and threw a cup of water at a flight attendant as he followed them toward the rear of the plane.
Passengers and Crew Help Subdue Suspect
As Damtew’s behavior escalated, the flight crew requested assistance through the plane’s public address system. Several passengers responded by helping the crew restrain Damtew with flex cuffs at the back of the plane until the flight landed safely at Newark Liberty International Airport.
Serious Charges and Possible Penalties
Damtew was charged with one count of interference with flight crew members and attendants by assault or intimidation. If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
