OXFORD, CT – Fire officials rescued 19 people and a dog from a flooded restaurant and adjacent residence Sunday evening following catastrophic flooding in Connecticut.
The Beacon Hose Company No. 1 in Beacon Falls shared photos of the rescue on Facebook on Monday, expressing gratitude for the “positive outcome” of the rescue at the Brookside Inn Restaurant in nearby Oxford.
“Fire crews from Oxford were extraordinarily busy with emergencies throughout town, so Beacon Hose requested permission from Oxford fire officials to stage a rescue operation,” the fire department said.
Photos show firefighters extending the ladder of a fire truck over rushing floodwaters to reach the flooded restaurant. Patrons could be seen climbing along the ladder to safety on higher ground.
Eighteen people were rescued from the restaurant, while one resident and her dog were also rescued from an adjacent apartment.
“During the operation, a large propane tank became dislodged from the building and began leaking, releasing propane that enveloped part of the building. There were also hazards in the rushing flood water, including vehicles and dumpsters,” the fire department said. No one was injured during the rescue.
“Our hearts are with our neighbors who have suffered losses and damages from Sunday’s catastrophic flooding,” the fire department wrote alongside the photos.
“Many Beacon Hose members for generations have enjoyed memorable occasions with our friends at Brookside and we’re especially devastated for everyone there.”

From Saturday night through Monday morning, towns in the area saw between six and over 12 inches of rain, according to the National Weather Service. Showers and thunderstorms remained in the forecast Monday for Oxford, Beacon Falls and surrounding areas.
“Our admiration goes out to our fellow first responders in Oxford, Seymour, Naugatuck, Southbury, and the surrounding areas who endured an incredibly long and challenging day Sunday, and it continues today,” the fire department said.
“We’re fortunate in Beacon Falls to have suffered little damage, but this flooding emergency is not over. Please travel cautiously as many roads have deteriorated or are washed out, and more rain is in the forecast.”
