Beatrice Taylor, 25, now faces a charge of aggravated manslaughter of an elderly person following the August 16 death of her patient. The victim, who had recently begun receiving additional support from Good Shepherd Hospice, relied on round-the-clock care in his home. On the fateful night of August 15, Taylor arrived for her 9 p.m. shift, taking over from the day aide who had prepared the patient and his wife for bed.
According to investigators, Taylor’s actions that night deviated significantly from company policy. Instead of remaining alert and attentive, she allegedly fell asleep on the living room couch shortly after arriving. It wasn’t until 1 a.m. that Taylor was roused by a noise from the bedroom.
Upon investigating, Taylor discovered the elderly man on the floor, his head trapped between the bed and nightstand. Despite the patient’s alleged request not to be touched, company protocol dictated immediate action. However, Taylor reportedly returned to sleep without alerting emergency services or her employers.

Delayed Response and Dire Consequences
The situation took a turn for the worse in the early hours of August 16. Between 3:45 a.m. and 4:53 a.m., Taylor awoke and, upon finding the patient unresponsive, engaged in a 36-minute phone call with her parents. It was only after this call that Taylor finally alerted her company and, subsequently, emergency services at 5:37 a.m.
Assisting Hands Home Health Care’s policies are clear: aides must prioritize patient safety by calling 911 immediately in emergency situations, followed by notifying the company. Furthermore, sleeping during shifts is strictly prohibited.
The medical examiner’s findings paint a grim picture of missed opportunities. Data from the victim’s pacemaker indicated he was still alive at 1 a.m., suggesting that prompt action at that time could have prevented his death. The cause of death was determined to be positional asphyxia, exacerbated by pre-existing health conditions.
