PONCE DE LEON, FL — Get ready for a wild story! A 37-year-old Florida man, James Michael Anderson, has been sentenced to six years in prison after pleading guilty to aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer. The incident occurred at Sol Fest, an EDM music and arts festival held in early May 2024 in Ponce de Leon, Florida. Anderson’s attack on a Holmes County Sheriff’s deputy tore off part of the officer’s scalp—exposing the skull!
Violent Attack at Sol Fest
On May 5, 2024, Anderson was arrested at the festival after biting an unnamed deputy on the head. The assault was so forceful that it tore off a portion of the deputy’s scalp, revealing bone underneath.
Authorities say Anderson also attempted to seize the deputy’s firearm from its holster during the struggle.
Following the incident, Anderson remarked that he had hair stuck in his teeth, a detail noted by Holmes County Chief Prosecutor Jacob Cook. The injured deputy, who has since returned to work, bears significant scarring from the attack.
Cook, reflecting on the case, described the deputy’s injury as the most gruesome bite wound he had encountered in his prosecutorial career. He had been prepared to bring the deputy to testify at trial before Anderson entered his guilty plea.
Sentencing and Legal Outcome
Anderson faced charges of aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer for the May 5 incident. After pleading guilty, a judge sentenced him to six years behind bars, followed by 10 years of felony probation.
The resolution brought an end to a case that shocked local law enforcement and festival attendees alike.
Sol Fest Arrests and Fallout
Sol Fest, which drew over 10,000 attendees in 2024 according to State Attorney Larry Basford, saw a total of 68 arrests during the event.
Most of those taken into custody faced drug possession charges involving substances like marijuana, cocaine, ecstasy, mushrooms, and MDMA, commonly known as molly. Among those arrested was a staff member of the festival.
The wave of incidents at Sol Fest prompted significant repercussions. New ordinances governing outdoor gatherings have been enacted in the area, and legal action has been initiated against the event’s promoter, signaling a crackdown on such gatherings following the unruly weekend.
The Holmes County Sheriff’s deputy injured in Anderson’s attack has made a full recovery and resumed duties.
A Moment for Reflection

The Holmes County deputy who endured a brutal attack at Sol Fest, along with his fellow officers and festival attendees, deserve recognition for their resilience in the face of such a jarring ordeal. The Ponce de Leon community has shown strength by coming together, enacting new measures, and addressing the fallout of that May 2024 weekend with resolve.
