TAMPA, FL – A Florida manâs arrest this week has stirred unease after authorities say he planted two explosive devices in Tampaâs Hard Rock Casino, endangering the safety of unsuspecting patrons.
Bryan Robert Eckley, 46, was taken into custody Wednesday, facing two counts of making, possessing, throwing, projecting, placing, or discharging any destructive device, according to a statement from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE).
Investigation Unfolds as Explosive Devices Are Found
The investigation began on September 30, when casino employees discovered two remote-controlled explosive devices hidden in restrooms within the casino. Surveillance and investigation initially identified the suspect only as a man driving a white Ford Explorer.
But after a coordinated effort involving FDLE, the Seminole Police Department, the Hillsborough County Sheriffâs Office, and the FBI Tampa Field Division, the man was identified as Eckley.
Law Enforcement Agencies Collaborate to Identify Suspect
âEckley did everything he could to hide from law enforcement,â said FDLE Tampa Bay Special Agent in Charge Mark Brutnell. âBut thanks to the exceptional work of this investigative and forensic team, he will be held accountable for his actions.â
Authorities say Eckley was already in the sights of law enforcement, as he had recently been arrested by the Hillsborough County Sheriffâs Office in an unrelated aggravated assault with a firearm case. Evidence from that assault case ultimately connected Eckley to the explosive devices in the casino, a link FDLE forensic analysts confirmed.
Statements from Authorities Highlight Importance of Public Safety
State Attorney Suzy Lopez commended the rapid response of law enforcement. âThis case is a shining example of how our local and state law enforcement agencies work together to make our community safe. When you intentionally attempt to harm innocent people, you will be held accountable by my office. I want to commend each of our law enforcement partners for their swift actions that ensured this defendantâs arrest and prosecution,â Lopez said.
Lieutenant Ken Azpeitia of the Seminole Police Department, who spearheaded the investigation, added his gratitude for the collaborative effort.
âOn behalf of the Seminole Police Department of the Seminole Tribe of Florida, I want to acknowledge and thank the organizations and individuals who have been instrumental in helping us make this important arrest,â Azpeitia said.
âPublic safety is our highest priority, and your teamwork and expertise have helped us to ensure public safety.â
Eckleyâs case highlights how, even in bustling spaces meant for fun and relaxation, vigilance and collaboration between agencies can swiftly neutralize serious threats. Authorities will continue to monitor the case as it proceeds through the court system, underscoring their commitment to safeguarding the community.
