HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL – We’ve all been there: stuck in traffic, watching the minutes tick by, feeling our patience run thin. But most of us don’t respond by crashing into a utility pole or threatening to shoot the workers trying to do their job. In Thonotosassa, Florida, one driver’s frustration boiled over, turning a routine power restoration project into a dangerous scene. Linemen were left scrambling for safety as the driver caused property damage and attempted to flee.

Power Restoration Interrupted by Impatient Driver

On Tuesday afternoon, power line crews were partially blocking McIntosh Road at Tomar Drive while working to restore power following storm damage. The disruption led to minor traffic delays, which seemed to trigger the anger of 57-year-old Kenneth Ray Velasco.

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, Velasco’s impatience boiled over when he struck a utility pole and fence with his vehicle in an attempt to leave the area. After causing the damage, Velasco allegedly tried to escape the scene.

Workers Targeted by Threats and Reckless Driving

When the linemen attempted to prevent Velasco from leaving, he allegedly “repeatedly” threatened to shoot them. The confrontation intensified as Velasco drove his vehicle toward the workers, forcing them to leap out of the way to avoid being hit.

Suspect Apprehended Without Incident

Deputies located Velasco’s vehicle nearby and conducted a traffic stop. He was arrested without incident and now faces serious charges, including aggravated assault and felony criminal mischief. Authorities estimate the damages to the utility pole and fence at approximately $1,000.

Sheriff’s Statement on the Incident

Sheriff Chad Chronister condemned Velasco’s behavior, emphasizing the linemen’s dedication in challenging conditions. “Linemen have been working tirelessly to restore power after the storm. For this person to threaten their lives and deliberately endanger them, all because of a traffic delay, shows a disturbing lack of regard for the safety of others and the critical work being done,” Chronister said.

He added, “We’re grateful no one was seriously hurt, and this suspect will face the full extent of the law for his egregious crimes.”
