ORLANDO, FL — A dangerous fugitive wanted for attempted murder in Orlando, Florida was nabbed by heroic agents at the U.S. border in Buffalo, New York, where his desperate bid for freedom backfired spectacularly. The Ukrainian citizen’s plan to slip into Canada crumbled when border agents slapped on the cuffs instead, finally closing a case that had baffled Orlando investigators.
Border Drama Unfolds
Ruslan Anatoliyovych Chernotkach, 48, found himself in handcuffs at the Peace Bridge crossing when Canadian authorities denied him entry and sent him back to the U.S. side.
During routine screening, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers uncovered an active felony warrant from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office in Orlando.
From Sunshine State to Steel City
The suspect’s journey from Florida to the northern border came to an abrupt halt as CBP officers whisked him to a secondary inspection area.
After confirming his identity and the validity of the warrant, they processed him for transfer to local authorities.
Behind Bars
Buffalo Police Department took custody of Chernotkach, who now sits in an Erie County jail cell awaiting extradition to Florida.
Buffalo Port Director Gaetano Cordone praised his officers’ vigilance in catching the wanted man.
Chernotkach is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
