APOPKA, FL — A 62-year-old Florida man’s alleged plan to shoot his ex-wife and make it look like self-harm fell apart spectacularly this weekend, leading to his arrest on attempted murder charges. Jonathan William Erdman Frenk walked out of his house Saturday afternoon with his hands raised, calmly telling police that his ex-wife had shot herself. Inside, officers found the wounded woman sitting in a chair, with a suspicious handgun conveniently placed on a nearby suitcase.

A Tale of Two Stories

At first, the victim played along with what investigators believe was Frenk’s scheme, telling officers she had injured herself.

But during her ambulance ride to the hospital, she apparently decided she couldn’t keep up the charade. That’s when she revealed to paramedics that Frenk had allegedly been the one who pulled the trigger.

The Plot Thickens

According to police reports, what started as an argument escalated when Frenk allegedly threatened to kill his ex-wife before shooting her in the leg.

Investigators say the victim only initially claimed self-injury because she feared getting shot again.

A Defense Attorney’s Unique Take

In what might be the most colorful legal filing of the year, Frenk’s defense attorney argued that if this was indeed a murder attempt, it was remarkably poorly planned.

The attorney pointed out that his client had access to a 15-round Glock .40 caliber handgun but only fired once, then called 911 and attempted to help the victim—hardly the actions of someone intent on murder.

Adding to the complexity of the case, court records show the victim wasn’t supposed to be at Frenk’s residence at all, due to an active no-contact order.

Frenk now faces charges of attempted felony murder and aggravated battery of a pregnant person. He remains in Orange County Jail without bond. As with all criminal cases, the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
