BOYNTON BEACH, FL – A Florida man claimed he shot a man he thought was armed with a gun, but surveillance footage tells a different story. The victim, it turns out, was holding a cigar, not a weapon. The startling twist in this Boynton Beach shooting has left police questioning the suspect’s version of events.

The Shooting Incident in Boynton Beach

At around 5:40 p.m. on Monday, Boynton Beach police responded to a shooting near the 600 block of NE 2nd Street.

The suspect, 33-year-old Xantus Jerry Ridore, told officers he had shot an armed man riding a bicycle up and down the street. Ridore claimed that the man he shot, later identified as 36-year-old Kalica Bertrand, was carrying a gun.

However, as officers dealt with a separate incident nearby, they were flagged down to assist Bertrand, who had been shot. He was quickly taken to Delray Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. Doctors have indicated that he will make a full recovery.

Surveillance Footage Reveals Key Evidence

As the investigation unfolded, police reviewed CCTV footage from a nearby department store. The video contradicted Ridore’s account.

Rather than a gun, Bertrand was seen holding what appeared to be a brown cigar. Detectives also noted that Bertrand never turned toward Ridore or pointed his hand at anyone, further disproving the claim that he had been armed.

Additionally, investigators uncovered that the two men had recently been involved in a physical altercation, which had sent Bertrand to the hospital. Ridore admitted to knowing Bertrand at the time of the shooting.

Charges and Ongoing Investigation

Ridore has been charged with attempted second-degree murder and discharging a firearm in public. He is currently being held at the Palm Beach County Jail while the investigation continues. Bertrand, thankfully, is expected to recover fully from his injuries, despite the shocking nature of the incident.
