PALM COAST, FL – In a shocking case that has gripped the community, Brendan Depa, an 18-year-old from Palm Coast, Florida, has been sentenced to five years in prison for a brutal attack on a high school paraprofessional. The incident, which occurred in February 2023, involved a violent assault on teacher Joan Naydich over a Nintendo Switch.
The Incident at Matanzas High School
The attack took place at Matanzas High School, where Depa, then 17, confronted Naydich in a hallway. Security footage captured the alarming moment when the towering teen, standing at 6-foot-6 and weighing 270 pounds, charged at Naydich, knocking her to the ground.
Depa then continued his assault, repeatedly stomping on the unconscious educator and punching her 15 times before staff members intervened to restrain him.
Sentencing and Legal Proceedings
Depa faced charges of felony aggravated battery causing bodily harm. Despite his defense team’s efforts to have him tried as a juvenile, Circuit Judge Terence Perkins sentenced him as an adult.
Depa received a five-year prison term followed by 15 years of probation. Additionally, upon his release, he will be placed in a group home as part of his probation conditions.
The judge’s decision came after a lengthy legal process, which included a rescheduled sentencing date in October to hear from additional witnesses. Prosecutors argued that Depa’s history of violence, including prior battery charges, warranted a severe punishment.

His adoptive mother, Leanne Depa, expressed her concerns about the sentence, arguing that her son needed treatment and support rather than incarceration. She criticized the school for not adequately addressing her son’s disabilities, which she claimed were known triggers for his behavior.

Brendan Depa has the option to appeal his sentence in writing. In the meantime, he has been ordered to have no contact with Joan Naydich and must remain at least 500 feet away from her home and workplace.
