CLERMONT, FL – A Florida teenager is facing multiple charges for allegedly stealing more than 100 gallons of cooking oil from a restaurant, police said.
The Clermont Police Department said that on Aug. 21, the manager of a Beef O’Brady’s restaurant in Clermont, just northwest of Orlando, reported confronting a suspect stealing cooking oil, who then fled in a “beat-up” white work van.
Police located the van and conducted a traffic stop, and the suspect told officers he was “just driving around collecting oil to take to a buyer.” Police said there was equipment in the van that looked like it could be part of a “criminal enterprise,” along with a pair of bolt cutters in the cab.
Police said a total of 129 gallons of cooking oil worth $436.02 was stolen from the restaurant.
The 17-year-old suspect, who was not named, was arrested and booked into the Lake County Jail on charges of burglary with intent to commit theft, possession of burglary tools, and traveling across county lines to commit crimes.
“This is a prime example of the ‘see something, say something’ movement,” Clermont Police said in a statement.
