STUART, FL – A Florida truck driver is accused of causing a terrifying crash that sent a woman and her 3-year-old child plunging into a pond—before he allegedly kept driving to make his scheduled delivery. Authorities say the 69-year-old semi driver changed lanes, hit the woman’s car, and forced her off the road. Instead of stopping to help, he allegedly slowed down for a moment before continuing on his way.
Semi-Truck Collision Leaves Mom and Toddler Trapped in Water
Alton Winters, of Florida, was arrested on Monday and charged with leaving the scene of a crash with injuries. He also received a citation for improper lane change, according to law enforcement officials.
The Martin County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to the crash around 9 a.m. on Feb. 17.
The accident happened along Kanner Highway, where first responders discovered the victims—still inside their submerged car.
Investigators determined that the woman had been driving when her vehicle “was struck by a semi-truck that was switching lanes.”
The impact sent her car careening off the road and into a pond.

“Witnesses reported that the impact caused the car to veer off the road and into the water,” the sheriff’s office said.
“Fortunately, the woman was able to free herself and her child from the vehicle and make it to the bank.”
Miraculously, the mother managed to escape the sinking vehicle and pull her young child to safety before it was too late.
Trucker Allegedly More Concerned About His Delivery Than the Crash
Authorities say Winters was identified as the semi driver involved in the crash. But instead of stopping to check on the victims, investigators said he “slowed down briefly but then drove off to a local produce company” to complete his scheduled delivery.
When officers caught up with Winters, he reportedly admitted to hitting the car but claimed he continued driving because “he had to make a delivery.”
The woman and her child were taken to a hospital and treated for minor injuries. Authorities have not released further details about their condition.
