PUNTA GORDA, FL – Imagine a predator so massive it rewrites the record books—a Florida panther weighing an incredible 166 pounds. Wildlife officials recently encountered this giant during a standard population survey in late January, revealing a feline far larger than any previously documented in the state. The adult male, now equipped with a GPS collar, offers a rare glimpse into the lives of these elusive endangered cats.

Record-Breaking Capture at Babcock Ranch

The colossal panther was tracked down at Babcock Ranch Preserve, a sprawling 68,000-acre state-owned sanctuary in Florida.

For years, trail cameras had captured images of this hefty cat prowling the area. In late January, a team of wildlife biologists, aided by specially trained hound dogs, located the animal. The dogs chased the panther up a tree, where experts sedated it with a dart.

After falling asleep within minutes, the team conducted a full health evaluation, collecting blood and tissue samples before fitting the cat with a tracking collar.

The process lasted about an hour.

Once complete, biologists administered a reversing agent, and the panther was back on its feet shortly after, walking away with a slight limp from old toe fractures. At around ten years old, this giant has likely reached its peak size, making it a standout among its kind.

Why So Big? A Diet of Feral Hogs

What fuels such an enormous panther?

Experts point to its diet, dominated by feral hogs—an invasive species introduced to Florida centuries ago by Spanish settlers. While deer are also on the menu, panthers often target hogs because they’re easier prey.

Biologists have noticed that panthers in hog-rich areas tend to grow larger, and this 166-pound specimen fits the pattern. These aggressive hogs wreak havoc on the preserve’s ecosystem, so the panther’s appetite helps control their numbers—a win for conservation efforts.

Tracking a Giant for Science

The GPS collar now attached to this massive cat will provide critical data.

Researchers use this technology to monitor movement, survival rates, reproduction, and habitat preferences. This information shapes strategies to protect and grow the endangered Florida panther population.

The subspecies, known scientifically as Puma concolor coryi, features long tails and fur in shades of tan, white, or rusty brown. Typically, males measure six to seven feet from nose to tail and weigh between 102 and 154 pounds—making this 166-pound beast an outlier.

Florida Panthers: A Species on the Brink

Listed as endangered since 1967, Florida panthers once faced near extinction, with only about ten left in the wild. Today, their numbers have climbed to an estimated 120 to 230 adults, largely confined to southwestern Florida.

Historically, these cats roamed the southeastern U.S., but hunting, habitat loss, and genetic challenges have shrunk their territory. Efforts to restore connected habitats aim to push their range northward, offering hope for recovery.

Modern Threats to Survival

Despite progress, dangers persist.

Vehicles pose the greatest risk, claiming 29 of the 36 known Florida panther deaths in 2024. This year has already seen a young male struck and killed by a car.

As the population grows, balancing human activity with wildlife preservation remains a pressing challenge for this iconic species.
