FAIRBANKS, AK – A young bald eagle found “frozen and unable to fly” in Alaska over the weekend was successfully returned to the wild after a careful thawing process. The Fairbanks Airport Police and Fire Department received a call from a concerned citizen on Saturday, reporting the young eagle was found in a frozen state and unable to take flight. A photo shared by the department showed the eagle lying on the snow near a fence.
After evaluating the situation, police contacted the Alaska Raptor Center for guidance. It was decided to warm up the bird in the back of a patrol car.
The eagle was placed in a quiet area of the station to rest while it thawed and dried out. Additional photos showed the eagle relaxing in the police vehicle.

Thawing Process and Examination
The eagle spent the night at the police station, awaiting further examination by wildlife officials. On Sunday, representatives from Alaska Fish and Game and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service evaluated the bird.
“After resting peacefully in a kennel in the Chief’s bay, getting fed salmon filets and fatty steak and getting all dry, our little guy/gal seemed ready to fly the coop (pun intended),” police said in a statement.
Successful Release
Wildlife experts found the eagle to be in “excellent physical condition” with no visible injuries or signs of illness. A video shared by the police department showed the bird being released back into the wild in the Fairbanks area.
“Even though we would have loved to have kept the little eagle we helped rescue last night as our new mascot, it had to be returned to the wild to do all the fun raptor things,” the police department said.
“We wish every day could be as exciting as this one was!”
