FARIBAULT, MN – Two teenage cousins from Faribault, Minnesota, took a dangerous game too far, leading to a head-on collision that sent five teens to the hospital. The shocking details emerged as new charges were filed, pointing to reckless behavior that stunned the local community. Thankfully, God’s grace spared these young lives, but they have a long road of healing ahead.
The crash, which took place in February, left three of the injured teens as players from the Faribault High School boys’ hockey team. Among the most seriously hurt was 18-year-old Beau Velishek, who had to be airlifted from the scene after being trapped inside his pickup truck. It’s hard to imagine the pain and fear his family must have felt, knowing that in just a split second, everything could have been lost.
Investigators now reveal that Velishek and his cousin were playing a deadly game of “chicken” in their pickup trucks when the crash happened. Both are facing charges, with Velishek hit with three counts of criminal vehicular operation and reckless driving. His younger cousin, just 17 at the time, is facing the same charges in juvenile court.
A Dangerous Game of ‘Chicken’ Unfolds
The crash took place on February 10, just after 1:40 p.m. in a residential area of Faribault. First responders were greeted by a chaotic scene, with one critically-injured girl lying on the ground and two other teens sitting on the grass with bloodied faces. Velishek, severely injured, was trapped in the wreckage, unable to recall the moments leading up to the crash.
As the investigation unfolded, both teens admitted to swerving toward each other while driving—what started as a reckless game ended in disaster. Neither Velishek nor his cousin backed off, leading to the head-on collision that sent shockwaves through their community.
Investigators Reveal Startling Details
Injured passengers reported confusion and concussions, with one suffering five broken bones. Witnesses later recounted that the boys were on their way home from the ice arena when the crash occurred. The crash reconstruction suggests both drivers contributed to the accident, but the younger cousin was determined to be the primary cause.
For the Faribault hockey community, the incident was a painful one. Their team faced the sudden loss of three players to serious injuries, but, miraculously, no lives were lost. Now, both families face the long road of recovery, with the added weight of criminal charges for reckless behavior that could have cost them far more.
