MINNEAPOLIS, MN – As Minneapolis moves forward in reshaping George Floyd Square, city officials have unveiled a comprehensive new plan that honors both the community’s voice and Floyd’s legacy. The project, scheduled to begin construction in 2025, comes as the city approaches the five-year anniversary of Floydâs death, an event that ignited worldwide calls for racial justice and change.
Vision for a Landmark Space
The cityâs redesign plan aims to establish George Floyd Square as an enduring site of remembrance while addressing the local communityâs needs. According to Minneapolis officials, feedback from thousands of residents shaped this new vision, which seeks to preserve the square as an active memorial and a neighborhood hub.

Key Components of the Redesign
The reconstruction targets a significant stretch: 38th Street from Park Avenue to 10th Avenue and Chicago Avenue from 37th Street to 39th Street. The city has proposed a “flexible-open street” design, which would prioritize pedestrian access and allow for the safe return of Metro Transit services along Chicago Avenue.
Officials highlight a commitment to maintaining vehicle access while safeguarding the exact site of Floydâs death as a dedicated space for remembrance, art installations, and community gatherings.
Redeveloping the Peoples’ Way
Another focal point of the plan is the Peoples’ Way, a former gas station site that has become a central gathering space. Applications for this purchase are open through November 22, inviting interested parties to help shape this integral part of the project.
