CHATHAM COUNTY, GA – A routine boating trip turned dangerous in Wassaw Sound, Georgia, on Saturday when a man was struck by his boat’s propeller while trying to free the grounded vessel. Quick coordination between local authorities and the U.S. Coast Guard ensured the injured man received life-saving medical care.
The 33-year-old was aboard his recreational vessel, Lulu, when it ran aground. As he attempted to dislodge the boat, he “made contact with the propellor,” according to the Coast Guard.
Emergency Airlift: Coast Guard Rescues Injured Boater
At approximately 1:55 p.m., the Chatham County Marine Patrol requested air support for the injured man. Coast Guard Sector Charleston deployed an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter to the scene to assist. The helicopter crew successfully airlifted the man and transported him to Memorial Hospital in Savannah for treatment.

A commercial salvage company was brought in to recover the Lulu, which remained grounded in Wassaw Sound after the accident. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources has launched an investigation into the incident to determine what went wrong.
This rescue underscores the unpredictable nature of boating accidents and the importance of quick action from emergency responders. Whether you’re out for recreation or responding to a stranded boat, things can take a dangerous turn in an instant—making preparedness essential on the water.
