GETTYSBURG, PA – The National Park Service is seeking help from the public after artifacts went missing from Gettysburg National Military Park in Pennsylvania.
Law enforcement rangers are investigating after it was discovered that artifacts went missing from a historical site near Brooke Avenue, known as the Timbers farm, on the southern end of the battlefield, sometime between December 2023 and January 2024.
Officials did not specify exactly what artifacts were missing. Only a partial house foundation remains at the Timbers farm site.
At the time of the Battle of Gettysburg, the farm, which included a farmhouse, barn, and other outbuildings, were owned by George Weikert. The home was severely damaged in the battle, which was the bloodiest of the Civil War, and a turning point in the conflict.
A few years after the war, in 1868, the farm was sold to John Timbers, a Black man who lived there with his wife and children.
Park officials are asking anyone who visited the area of Timbers farm between December 2023 to January 2024, or who has information about the missing artifacts, to email to the park at GETT_Superintendent@nps.gov or submit an anonymous tip to the Adams County Crimestoppers hotline at 717-334-8057 or online at accrimestoppers.com.
Officials said a reward is being offered.
“You don’t have to tell us who you are, but please tell us what you know,” park officials said. “Thank you for your assistance in protecting the resources of Gettysburg NMP.”
