Minnie Quay was just 15 years old when she fell head over heels for a young sailor who would stop by Forester whenever his ship docked nearby. Her parents, James and Mary Ann, weren’t too happy about the relationship, and her mother was known to holler that she’d rather see Minnie dead than with this man.
One day, news came that the sailor’s ship had sunk in the Great Lakes. Minnie was heartbroken, especially since her parents hadn’t let her say goodbye the last time he left. A few days later, on April 27, 1876, Minnie walked down to the pier while watching her little brother, James Jr. She waved to the people sitting on the porch of the Tanner House inn, and then she jumped into the cold waters of Lake Huron.
👻 A Ghost on the Beach
Ever since that fateful day, folks say they’ve seen Minnie’s ghost roaming the beaches of Forester. Some say she just walks back and forth, waiting for her love to return. Others claim she tries to lure young girls into the water to join her in death.
If you visit Minnie’s grave in the Forester cemetery, you’ll see all sorts of things people have left behind – mostly coins. The old-timers say you’d better leave something, or Minnie might just follow you home.

Forester isn’t much more than a ghost town these days, with only about 40 year-round residents. But back in Minnie’s time, it was a bustling lumber town. The old Tanner Inn is still standing, though it’s been used for all sorts of things over the years – an inn, a speakeasy (or “blind pig”) during Prohibition, and even a brothel!
In the summer, the population of Forester swells as campgrounds fill up with visitors. Some of them are just there to enjoy the beautiful Michigan scenery, but others come hoping to catch a glimpse of Minnie’s ghost.
