SILVER BAY, MN – Prepare to be captivated by the breathtaking beauty of Minnesota’s North Shore as you explore the Gitchi-Gami State Trail, a paved path that promises to become one of the most scenic trails in the nation.

Running parallel to the North Shore Scenic Drive Byway, the popular Superior Hiking Trail, and the Lake Superior Water Trail, the Gitchi-Gami offers an active and immersive way to experience the stunning landscapes of this region.

🌊 A Trail of Unparalleled Views

Once completed, the Gitchi-Gami State Trail will stretch 89 miles along the North Shore, winding its way through five state parks from Two Harbors to Grand Marais. Currently, the longest continuous section spans more than 17 miles, starting from Gooseberry Falls State Park and traversing the Split Rock River, Split Rock Lighthouse State Park, Beaver Bay, and finally reaching Silver Bay.

One of the trail’s highlights is the passage through Split Rock Lighthouse State Park, where you’ll ride just below a wayside rest and scenic overlook, offering a picture-perfect view of the iconic lighthouse. To visit the lighthouse and interpretive center, take the short spur trail leading to the site. Both Split Rock Lighthouse State Park and Beaver Bay have trail centers with parking facilities.

🌄 Unforgettable Moments Along the Way

The half-mile lakeside swing around Highway 61’s Silver Creek Tunnel is a must-visit section, whether on wheels or on foot, for its panoramic views of Lake Superior.

Another notable stretch is the three-mile trail from Schroeder to Tofte, passing through Temperance River State Park and offering a stunning view of Carlton Peak. This section makes for a perfect out-and-back casual ride or family trip of six miles, with the opportunity to stop and hike to the impressive Temperance River Gorge.

When navigating through the town of Tofte, there is a half-mile gap in the trail. However, taking the Town Park Road can lead riders to excellent opportunities to engage with Lake Superior. The trail resumes on the northeast side of Tofte, continuing for another 7.3 miles.

🛣️ Trail Sections and Highlights

The Gitchi-Gami State Trail begins with a short yet impressive one-mile section of the original North Shore Drive, running 4,000 feet around the Silver Cliff Creek Tunnel northwest of Two Harbors. This section offers a spectacular vista of Lake Superior and features a reproduction of the original 1924 North Shore Gateway arch and brass plaque welcoming visitors. While not yet ready for through traffic, parking just east of the tunnel allows you to walk across the trail bridge and enjoy the view, as well as observe rock climbers and capture memorable travel photos.

Seven miles east of Silver Creek Cliff lies the popular Gooseberry Falls State Park, where the next segment of the Gitchi-Gami Trail begins. Access the trail near the Visitors Center or add an extra mile to your ride by winding through the park, past the campground, and near the mouth of the Gooseberry River, where you’ll find the trailhead for a gentle, sweeping ride up towards the Visitor Center and Highway 61 bridge over the falls.

The trail continues through Iona’s Beach Scientific and Natural Area before leading to Split Rock Lighthouse State Park and the towns of Beaver Bay and Silver Bay.

Another notable section is the Temperance River State Park segment, which starts at the east parking lot in Schroeder and travels through the park, about four miles west of Tofte. This segment crosses the Temperance River Gorge and an ancient stream bed, thought to have been an ancient route for the Temperance River into Lake Superior. The gorge offers spectacular views of the river and rocks below, and you can also catch a glimpse of the 1,526-foot Carlton Peak.

The newest addition to the trail is the 4.8-mile segment connecting Grand Marais to the Cut Face Creek State Wayside. This section is a flowy trail with numerous opportunities to see the lake, and a highlight is the wooden arched bridge with viewing platforms on each side, offering views of the Fall River on one side and Lake Superior on the other. This segment also links to the Grand Marais Corridor Trail, a one-mile paved bike trail that winds through the lively downtown district of Grand Marais.
