WILLMAR, MN – The Glacial Lakes State Trail is a 28-mile paved pathway that takes you through a landscape shaped by the retreat of ancient glaciers some 10,000 years ago in Minnesota. The numerous lakes scattered throughout the area surrounding the trail serve as enduring remnants of the region’s glacial past, crafting a visually stunning backdrop for outdoor recreation and tourism endeavors.
🚲 Traversing Farmland, Prairie, and Charming Communities
The trail begins at the Civic Center on the northern edge of Willmar and heads northeast, guiding you through a mix of beautiful farmland and prairie. Along the way, you’ll pass through the welcoming communities of Spicer, New London, Hawick, and Paynesville, where the trail currently ends. An additional five-mile paved segment between Roscoe and Richmond offers even more opportunities for exploration.
🌾 Connecting Trails and Scenic Loops
The Glacial Lakes State Trail serves as a hub for several connecting trails and scenic loops, allowing you to extend your adventure and discover even more of the region’s natural beauty. Just northeast of Willmar, you can embark on the five-mile Eagle Lake Loop Trail, which circles back to the Civic Center. A city bike route also leads you to downtown Willmar, where you can explore the local shops and eateries.
In Spicer, take a detour around the stunning Green Lake on a combination of trails and signed routes, immersing yourself in the beauty of this glacial gem. At the eastern end of the Glacial Lakes Trail, Paynesville’s connector route leads you to the Lake Koronis Trail, offering even more scenic views and recreational opportunities.
🌄 Connecting to the RoCoRi Trail and Sibley State Park
At Richmond, the Glacial Lakes Trail connects to the RoCoRi Trail, which continues on to Rockville. This connection opens up even more possibilities for long-distance rides and multi-day adventures.
A recently finished three-mile segment of the trail now meanders through the scenic expanse of Sibley State Park, offering a captivating display of the park’s varied terrains. Starting at the park border at Highway 71, the trail meanders through prairie and woodlands, passing by the visitor center, beach, and the new amphitheater next to the trail center before concluding at the boat landing. Plans are in the works to establish a connection from Highway 71 to the nearby town of New London, further enhancing the trail’s connectivity and accessibility.
