SAN DIEGO, CA — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a recall of specific Upper Crust Bakery LP bread products sold here in California, as well as several other states nationwide. The recall stems from the presence of glass fragments found on top of the bread, posing significant health risks. Consuming these fragments could lead to injuries such as damage to teeth, lacerations in the mouth or throat, intestinal perforation, or choking.

The FDA has classified this as a Class II recall, indicating potential for temporary or reversible health issues, but not long-term serious harm. A Class I recall, which is more severe, does not apply here.

Affected Products and Regions

The recall is for specific Upper Crust Bakery LP bread products sold in California, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Maryland, Delaware, and Ohio. The recalled items, all sold frozen in corrugated paper cartons, include:

  • Ancient Grains Hoagie roll in 4-ounce containers, recall number: F-0741-2025 in Lot #90
  • Multigrain Sourdough rolls in 18-ounce containers, recall number: F-0742-2025 in Lot #90
  • Whole Grain Multigrain rolls in 20-ounce containers, recall number: F-0743-2025 in Lot #92

The FDA reports that 818 cases are affected, with 699 cases of the 18-ounce Multigrain Sourdough rolls, 89 cases of the 4-ounce Ancient Grains Hoagie Rolls, and 30 cases of the 20-ounce Whole Grain Multigrain rolls.

What Consumers Should Do

The FDA advises anyone who has purchased these products to avoid consuming them. Consumers should either dispose of the bread in a secure trash can or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Upper Crust Bakery LP, based in Maryland, notified the FDA of the issue on April 12, prompting the swift recall action.

Staying Safe and Informed

While it remains unclear if any injuries have occurred, the potential dangers of glass contamination make this recall critical for affected consumers.

Those in the six states where the bread was sold should inspect their freezers and take immediate action if they have the recalled products. Staying vigilant about product safety ensures households can avoid unnecessary risks.
