South Bend, Indiana – At the Potawatomi Zoo in Indiana, there’s a heartwarming story unfolding that’s bound to put a smile on your face. A loving mama golden retriever is taking on the role of a surrogate mom to three adorable African painted dog pups. And guess what? Half of them aren’t even hers!
The zoo faced a bit of a challenge when a first-time African painted dog mom wasn’t quite ready for the demanding job of raising her eight pups. But don’t worry, the zoo’s canine team sprang into action.
They knew these pups needed a surrogate mom who could provide the love and care they required. That’s when the Indiana Council for Animal Welfare introduced them to Kassy, a golden retriever who had just become a mom herself.
With Kassy’s love and attention, the pups got a second chance at life. While five of them needed a little extra help, three little survivors named Blue, Red, and Orange emerged. They’re now forming a unique bond together in a special enclosure at the zoo.
These pups might have faced a challenging start, but they’re now thriving under Kassy’s watchful eyes. At 11 weeks old, they’re growing strong and healthy. And their journey is far from over!
African painted dogs are incredible creatures, known for their resilience and large litters. But sadly, habitat fragmentation has put them in danger. The zoo is committed to preserving these wild species, even if it means taking extraordinary measures.
