MORGANTON, NC – A lifeless body wrapped in a sheet floated silently in the Johns River, waiting to be discovered. In late August, a group of kayakers afternoon of fun was shattered as they neared the Corpening Bridge in Morganton, North Carolina.
The kayakers, enjoying a summer outing, were shocked as they came across what turned out to be the remains of Mark Dwayne Mitchell.
Authorities responded quickly to the scene, and soon after, the investigation took an even more disturbing turn. The Burke County Sheriff’s Office launched a probe, piecing together details of Mitchell’s death and the circumstances that followed.
Arrests Follow Investigation
The discovery led investigators to execute a search warrant at 2786 Pax Hill Road, located just three miles from where Mitchell’s body was found. As evidence mounted, police arrested three individuals: Robert Ford Dale Jr., 58, his son Rocky Lee Dale, 35, and Lorie Knight Stephens, 50.
All three suspects were charged with felony concealment of death and disturbing human remains.
While the sheriff’s office has not yet revealed how Mitchell died or the precise roles the suspects played in disposing of his body, further charges are expected as the investigation continues.
Ongoing Investigation
The gravity of the case is reflected in the bond amounts set for the suspects. Rocky Dale was held without bond, while Robert Dale and Lorie Stephens were given secured bonds of $135,000 and $75,000, respectively.
Law enforcement officials have remained tight-lipped about many details, but they have assured the public that more information will be forthcoming as the case progresses.
The arrests have left the quiet town of Morganton grappling with questions, as the investigation into this tragic incident unfolds.
