OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – Fifty people in our community have been charged with serious drug and firearm offenses, and if it weren’t for a recent investigation, many of them might still be on the streets of Oklahoma City. For two months, law enforcement ran “Operation Sonic Boom,” aiming to cut down on the violent crime threatening the safety of our residents. What they uncovered is alarming—and should leave you questioning just how safe you and your family really are.
Nearly 200 Firearms Seized—Are You Safe?
Cops say 193 firearms were seized during this operation. Yes, almost 200 guns, including 9 machine guns and 83 machine gun conversion devices capable of turning regular guns into deadly automatic weapons.
And if that wasn’t terrifying enough, law enforcement also confiscated two 3D printers—tools used to create these dangerous devices in secret. Think about that: people in your city are printing weapons that could be used in the next violent crime.
The Drugs Fueling Crime in Your Backyard
Over 139 pounds (63 kilograms) of drugs, including methamphetamine, fentanyl, and cocaine, were also taken off the streets. With a street value nearing $750,000, it’s clear this isn’t just a few bad apples. This is organized crime on a large scale, right here in our backyard.
“There is no doubt that Operation Sonic Boom has had a resounding impact to make Oklahoma City safer. This Operation alone removes from our streets nearly 200 dangerous firearms and machineguns, and over 63 kilos of deadly drugs,” U.S. Attorney Robert J. Troester said in a statement.
But here’s the troubling reality: for every weapon seized and every criminal charged, how many more are slipping through the cracks? How many other drug traffickers and armed criminals are operating undetected, waiting for their moment to strike?
Law Enforcement Faces Unimaginable Danger to Protect You
According to Jeff Boshek, Special Agent in Charge of the ATF Dallas Field Office, law enforcement worked tirelessly, putting themselves in danger to protect you. And thank God they did!
“Early mornings, late nights, time away from family, dangerous situations are all worth it for law enforcement officers when the outcome is life changing for the citizens and communities they protect. The streets of Oklahoma City are forever altered due to the excellent work by the United States Attorney’s Office, ATF, and our law enforcement partners during Operation Sonic Boom,” Boshek said.
The Bigger Picture: Oklahoma City at Risk
Operation Sonic Boom wasn’t just about taking down a few bad guys. It was funded by the Texoma High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA), a coalition of local, state, and federal agencies working together. This wasn’t a small, isolated bust. It was an effort that involved agencies from across the region, including the Oklahoma City Police Department and District Attorney, the state Department of Public Safety and Bureau of Narcotic and Dangerous Drugs, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s Dallas Field Division, and the U.S. Marshal Service.
Of the 50 people charged, 42 were hit with federal charges—including illegal firearms trafficking, possession and transfer of machine guns, and drug trafficking. The remaining defendants are now facing state charges in Oklahoma County for serious crimes like aggravated fentanyl trafficking and firearm possession after juvenile adjudication. These aren’t petty criminals. These are dangerous people who have been living among us.
“We appreciate the efforts of local, state and federal law enforcement officials during this months-long operation,” said Oklahoma County District Attorney Vicki Zemp Behenna. “The invaluable work they did to get these guns and drugs off the streets and out of hands of dangerous felons will ultimately keep our city and citizens safer.”
The Chilling Truth
Despite this major bust, can we really sleep better at night? For every successful operation like Sonic Boom, countless criminals continue their illegal activities. Meth, fentanyl, and firearms continue to flood our streets, and your family could be next to suffer the consequences.
We must recognize the immense courage and dedication of the law enforcement officers who risked their lives to protect our communities. Their hard work, long hours, and sacrifices have made a lasting impact on the safety of Oklahoma City. Without their bravery, our city would remain in the grip of dangerous criminals.
