CHESTERFIELD, VA – The kitchen was engulfed in smoke, the smell of charred metal and shattered glass filling the air. On the evening of September 5th, firefighters rushed to a Chesterfield, Virginia home after receiving a call about an oven explosion. What they found left them stunned: a melted handgun, fused to the oven’s metal rack.

As smoke billowed from the house, the team of firefighters worked quickly to assess the scene. Once inside, they discovered that the explosion had been triggered by a forgotten firearm left in the oven.

“It turns out, someone turned the oven on with the gun inside, the weapon heated up, and five rounds went off,” Chesterfield County Fire and EMS reported. Luckily, no one was harmed by the incident, but the potential for disaster was evident.

A Startling Reminder of Firearm Safety

The fire department took the opportunity to issue a warning about both fire hazards and gun safety, reminding residents of the importance of securing firearms.

“When you place any item in the oven, it is easy to forget it is there, which can lead to a fire or something worse when you turn it on,” they stated. “You should also make sure to properly store your firearms. Keep them somewhere secure, like a gun safe.”

The oven explosion serves as a chilling reminder of how quickly a mistake can lead to tragedy. Fire officials emphasized that many people unknowingly store items in the oven and urged them to double-check before turning it on.

Firearms Need Proper Storage

Experts say bullets need to reach around 400 degrees before they can spontaneously discharge. Although no injuries occurred, incidents like these are preventable with proper firearm storage.

The CDC reports that 43% of U.S. households keep loaded guns, but half of those do not secure them in locked containers. This poses a significant safety risk, particularly when firearms are not stored in gun safes or secured with locks.

Local fire officials encourage gun owners to use secure storage options like lockboxes or gun safes, as well as additional safety measures such as cable locks and trigger locks. This close call in Chesterfield could have ended much differently, and authorities hope it will serve as a wake-up call for all gun owners.
