HAMILTON COUNTY, TN – A festive Halloween event in Harrison, Tennessee, turned heartbreaking on Friday night when a 12-year-old boy lost his life after a tragic accident involving a hayride. What was meant to be a night of spooky fun ended in sorrow, as families and organizers now grapple with the devastating loss.

Accident at Haunted Hilltop

The incident took place at Haunted Hilltop, a Halloween attraction in Harrison, just outside Chattanooga. The event features a haunted house, hayrides, a bonfire, and other seasonal activities. According to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a report of a child being struck by a tractor in the 8200 block of Highway 58. Emergency personnel from Hamilton County EMS were also dispatched to the scene.

Witnesses told deputies that a group of children had been playing near the hayride route, hiding behind bushes to frighten passing riders. In a tragic turn, one of the children attempted to jump onto the moving trailer but fell beneath the wheels.

Organizer’s Statement and Community Reaction

Event organizers later explained in a Facebook post that the boy had crossed a barrier and “jumped out and attempted to get on the side of the trailer” when he was fatally injured.

The victim was identified as 12-year-old Samuel Jessen by the Hamilton County Medical Examiner’s Office.

“The HCSO family extends our thoughts and sympathy to the family of the deceased juvenile, as well as the others who witnessed the tragic event. We ask the community also keep this family in their prayers during this difficult time,” the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office said in a public statement.

Haunted Hilltop Suspends Operations

Following the tragedy, Haunted Hilltop organizers announced they would close for the following Saturday, citing the need to pause operations in light of the incident. “Our Hearts and Prayers go out to the family affected in this, Please keep us all in your prayers!” they shared in a post.
