LOS ANGELES COUNTY, CA – Hannah Kobayashi’s long-anticipated “bucket list” trip to New York City has taken a troubling turn. The 31-year-old woman from Haiku, Hawaii, vanished after landing in Los Angeles, leaving behind cryptic text messages and a string of unanswered calls. Now, her family is desperate for answers as they navigate the mystery of her disappearance.

A Dream Trip That Never Took Flight

Kobayashi was flying from Maui to New York City, excited to visit her aunt and fulfill a “bucket list dream.” She had even prepared a handwritten itinerary with the hopeful phrase, “bucket list dreams become a reality.” After landing in Los Angeles on Nov. 8, she was scheduled to catch a connecting flight to New York.

However, surveillance footage confirmed she arrived at LAX but missed her connecting flight 42 minutes later. The reason for this missed connection remains unclear. Instead of continuing to New York, her journey took an unsettling turn.

On Saturday, Kobayashi appeared to be in Los Angeles, with a video showing her at an event in the city, HawaiiNewsNow reported. However, her phone last pinged on Monday at LAX, and it has been off ever since.

Cryptic Messages Spark Fear

Kobayashi sent a series of troubling text messages to a friend, raising alarm among her family. In one message, she claimed she was “tricked into pretty much giving away all my funds” and blamed “deep hackers” for stealing her identity and money. She added that she might go to a homeless shelter or take a bus “to the redwoods.”

Another message suggested she had been deceived “for someone I thought I loved.” Family members, however, question whether these texts were sent by her, as the language felt out of character.

“She texted [the friend] that she was scared and that she couldn’t come back home or something. It was just really weird texts,” her mother, Brandi Yee, told HawaiiNewsNow.

Her aunt, Larie Pidgeon, noted that communication with Kobayashi became strange after she missed her flight. “Everything started getting fuzzy,” Pidgeon said.

In another text sent to her aunt, Kobayashi apologized for “craziness” and claimed she was “definitely intercepted.” She also mentioned experiencing a “very intense spiritual awakening.”

A Family Desperate for Answers

The family has filed reports with the LAPD, LAX authorities, and the FBI, hoping to uncover what happened to Kobayashi. Her loved ones described her as responsible and excited about the trip, which included plans to stay in a pricey hotel and attend a special event.

Her aunt emphasized that Kobayashi’s disappearance is completely out of character, describing her as a responsible person who had been eagerly anticipating the trip. She noted that Kobayashi had made significant plans, including booking an expensive hotel room and purchasing event tickets worth hundreds of dollars.

Kobayashi’s mother made an emotional plea: “We just wanted to get the word out as soon as possible, because the more time that passes, the less we know what happens. Anything could happen.”

Kobayashi is described as 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing about 140 pounds, with brown hair, brown eyes, fair skin, and freckles.
