GLENDALE, AZ – An Arizona pastor, Hans Schmidt, miraculously survived a gunshot wound to the head while street preaching last year. On November 15, 2023, Schmidt, a 26-year-old father of two and military veteran, had been preaching in his usual spot at the intersection of 51st Ave and Peoria in Glendale, Arizona when the shocking event of occurred.
Despite the severity of the wound, Schmidt managed to drive himself to his church, where his wife, Zulya, noticed he was bleeding. After trying to speak to her, Schmidt realized something was terribly wrong as no words were coming out. He was rushed to the hospital.
Initially, Schmidtâs family believed he had been assaulted, but a CT scan quickly confirmed a far more dangerous situation. Doctors discovered a bullet lodged in his brain.
A Battle for Life After a Shocking Revelation
The discovery left doctors and his family fearing the worst.His condition deteriorated rapidly, and Schmidt was placed on life support and into an induced coma.
The severity of his injuries led doctors and authorities to expect the worst, but Schmidtâs family turned to prayer, hoping for a miracle. Remarkably, despite the odds, he began to recover.
After months of uncertainty, Schmidt was discharged from the hospital in January. Though doctors couldnât remove all the bullet fragments due to the risk, Schmidt continues to make progress with physical and speech therapy.
Faith, Forgiveness, and a Return to the Streets
Despite the life-threatening injury, Schmidt has returned to street preaching, showing his unwavering faith. He has also found it within himself to forgive the shooter, explaining that holding a grudge wouldnât change what happened. Schmidt emphasized that forgiveness is a key part of his faith, helping him navigate this challenging journey.
Police are still searching for the individual responsible for the shooting. The investigation continues, but Schmidt and his family remain focused on healing. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help the family manage their significant medical expenses.
