The story of Hard Times Cafe in Minneapolis began in 1992 when eight workers from a struggling restaurant decided to create a space where people from all walks of life could enjoy coffee and vegetarian food.
Since then, it has become a beloved spot in the West Bank neighborhood, attracting artists, musicians, students, and activists. Even local Minnesota politicians have found it a great place to connect with the community.

In 2007, it underwent a significant remodel to update its ventilation system, which took longer than expected but was supported by the community, including financial help from another local cooperative, Seward Community Cafe.
