AKRON, OH – A man who shot a stranger in the face over a dispute about potato chips at an Ohio strip club has been sentenced to at least nine years in prison. The bizarre and violent incident unfolded at Lusty Adventure in Akron, leaving the victim with serious injuries, but he managed to survive the attack.

The Attack at Lusty Adventure Strip Club

On November 28, 2023, around 9 p.m., Melvin Wright Jr., 43, approached a 31-year-old man inside Lusty Adventure, a strip club in Akron, and asked for some of his potato chips. When the victim refused to share, Wright responded with extreme violence. Following the refusal, Wright followed the victim outside to his car and shot him in the face.

The victim, not knowing Wright, was able to drive himself to Summa Health Akron City Hospital. After six days of treatment, he survived the shooting.

Arrest and Legal Consequences

Wright was arrested the following day after police spotted him boarding a Metro bus at the Transit Center on South Broadway Street. Officers also seized a handgun that was found on him during his arrest.

Wright pleaded guilty to attempted murder, illegal possession of a firearm, and having weapons while under disability. As part of his sentencing, he was given a prison term of 9 to 12 years and will be required to register as a violent offender annually for the next 10 years following his release.

Prosecutor’s Statement

Summit County Prosecutor Elliot Kolkovich spoke about the case, saying, “Summit County is safer without Melvin Wright on our streets. Senseless violence has no place in Akron, and I am grateful that the survivor of this crime is continuing his courageous recovery.” The prosecutor’s remarks highlighted the senseless nature of the crime and the importance of removing such individuals from the community.

Wright’s sentencing closes a chapter on an incredibly strange and violent crime, where a dispute over a snack turned into a potentially deadly encounter. The victim’s survival and ongoing recovery provide a somber reminder of the unpredictable and dangerous nature of violent crime.
