WINTERSET, IA – A tragic scene unfolded on a rural Iowa farm when an elderly farmer was killed by a bull while ensuring the animal’s water supply hadn’t frozen. The shocking incident has left a quiet community mourning the loss of one of its own.

Authorities from the Madison County Sheriff’s Office responded to an emergency call on Sunday, Jan. 19, around 7:31 p.m. The report detailed a severe injury caused by a bull on a farm located in the 2400 block of Millstream Avenue in Madison County.

Authorities Respond to Disturbing Discovery

When deputies and Madison County Ambulance EMTs arrived, they found 76-year-old Mark Hollingsworth unresponsive in the cattle feeding area of his property. Despite immediate lifesaving efforts, Hollingsworth was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation revealed that Hollingsworth had entered the bull’s pen to check whether its water supply had frozen during the frigid temperatures. It was during this routine check that the bull fatally attacked him.

The grim discovery was made by family members, who called 911 after finding Hollingsworth in the pen.
