EATONTON, GA — A month after Westminster middle school teacher Gary Jones and his fiancée, Spelman College instructor Jocelyn Wilson, vanished during a fishing trip, authorities recovered Jones’ body from Lake Oconee in Georgia. The grim finding came on a Sunday afternoon, with Jones located in 45 feet of water among timber, not far from where Wilson’s body was found a day after their disappearance on February 8. The couple had been celebrating Jones’ 50th birthday when they went missing.
A Birthday Trip Turns Fatal
Jones and Wilson, engaged over the holidays and set to wed on March 14, were last seen on a fishing boat on Lake Oconee. Hours later, the boat was found empty, still running in circles, with Jones’ wallet, driver’s license, and hotel key card onboard, alongside a cookie with icing.
Wilson’s body surfaced the following day, still clutching her cellphone, likely due to air remaining in her lungs after her death. Jones, however, remained missing until Wisconsin search-and-recovery expert Keith Cormican used underwater sonar technology to locate him weeks later.
Massive Search Effort
The search for Jones and Wilson spanned three weeks, involving sonar, cadaver dogs, helicopters, and drones—an effort Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills described as unprecedented in his 40 years overseeing Lakes Oconee and Sinclair.
Authorities tapped extensive government and civilian resources, with Jones’ family funding the operation. Cormican’s expertise ultimately brought closure when he found Jones’ body, which Sheriff Sills reported.
Remembering Gary Jones
Gary Jones, a middle school science teacher at Westminster Schools since 2002, also coached eighth-grade basketball and led the track and field program.
His brother, Michael Jones, spoke about Gary’s impact, noting that he touched many lives in his 50 years, achieving what might take others 85 or 90 years. Michael emphasized Gary’s lifelong devotion to faith and service, expressing hope to continue his legacy.
Authorities do not suspect foul play, and autopsies are planned for both Jones and Wilson.
Jocelyn Wilson’s Legacy
Jocelyn Wilson taught math at Spelman College, where the institution praised her lasting influence on students and colleagues.
The couple first met 30 years ago as students at Clark Atlanta University and had recently reconnected, according to Wilson’s friend Natasha Harrison. Rapper Ceelo Green, a childhood friend of Wilson’s, mourned her loss on Instagram, calling her a near-sister and lamenting the tragic nature of her death.
A Community in Mourning
The loss of Jones and Wilson, who disappeared while celebrating a milestone, has left their families, students, and colleagues grappling with grief. The recovery of Jones’ body brings an end to an exhaustive search, but questions linger as autopsies loom.
For now, their communities honor two educators whose lives intertwined decades ago and ended together on Lake Oconee.

The lives of Gary Jones and Jocelyn Wilson, along with the tireless efforts of their families, Sheriff Howard Sills, Keith Cormican, and countless others who joined the search, deserve recognition for their depth and dedication. The Westminster Schools, Spelman College, and broader Georgia community stand united in mourning, their collective strength shining through this profound loss. As autopsies proceed and healing begins, readers can find solace in the enduring legacies of two educators whose impact will ripple forward, inspiring future generations. — Jack and Kitty Norton, Founders and Editors
