ESCONDIDO, CA – The joy of decorating for the holidays quickly turned into a heartbreaking tragedy when a 24-year-old man was fatally electrocuted while hanging Christmas lights in Escondido, California. Antonio Pascual Mateo’s life ended on November 21, 2024, after a deadly mistake while preparing for the holiday season.
The Fatal Incident
At around 10:48 a.m., Mateo was on the roof of a home, hanging Christmas lights near a high-voltage power line. According to the San Diego County medical examiner’s office, he “threw the lights” over the power line, causing the fatal electrocution. The location of the home, in proximity to the power line, created a deadly risk.
Emergency responders were called to the scene, and paramedics arrived to find Mateo “hanging upside down from a tree.” After rescuing him from the tree, first responders began “advanced cardiovascular life support” and transported him to Palomar Medical Center in an attempt to save his life. Despite their efforts, Mateo was pronounced dead at 12:10 p.m.
Family’s Heartfelt Tribute
In an emotional statement on a GoFundMe page set up by his family to raise money for funeral expenses, they revealed that Mateo had been “trapped for an hour” as paramedics waited for the power company to cut the electricity to the line.
The family expressed deep sorrow, writing, “He had been working on putting up Christmas lights around the tree. Christmas lights forever have a meaning to us, he will remain in our hearts for eternity.”
The family’s tribute reflects the lasting impact of the loss, underscoring the personal connection to the tradition of holiday decorations.
Official Cause of Death
The San Diego County medical examiner confirmed that Mateo’s cause of death was high-voltage electrocution. The tragic accident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of electrical work, especially during a time when many people are installing outdoor lighting for the holidays.
As the community mourns the tragic loss of Antonio Pascual Mateo, his family and loved ones are left to cherish the memories of a young man whose life was taken too soon. In times of deep sorrow, the words of 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 offer comfort: “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” May Mateo’s family find solace in their grief, supported by the love of those around them and the comfort of their faith.
