RED WING, MN – Authorities in Red Wing, Minnesota say a man fatally shot his partner multiple times before engaging law enforcement in a tense standoff at his apartment. The confrontation ended with his arrest after hours of negotiations.

Fatal Shooting and Criminal Charges

Darryl Dion Nixon Jr., 41, is charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of 41-year-old Andrea Broyld. The charges, filed Tuesday in Goodhue County District Court, reveal that Broyld was shot ten times before Nixon barricaded himself in his apartment on Sunday.

The incident took place in the 1000 block of Putnam Avenue. According to the complaint, Nixon’s mother told investigators the couple had visited her home shortly before the shooting. They had stopped by to pick up a sweet potato pie and appeared to be “in good spirits,” she said.

Fifteen minutes later, Nixon reportedly called his mother in distress, crying and stating that Broyld “was gone.”

Standoff With Police

Law enforcement was alerted through two 911 calls—one from a woman described as crying and asking for help, and another from Nixon’s mother. Officers arrived at the apartment and found Nixon at the door, holding a semi-automatic pistol.

The criminal complaint states Nixon repeatedly told officers, “Shoot me,” while refusing commands to drop the weapon. He also made comments about someone being dead.

Negotiators worked to de-escalate the situation. At one point, they offered to check on Broyld if Nixon would allow them inside. According to the charge, Nixon admitted during negotiations that Broyld was “dead” and sobbed, “cause I shot her.”

After approximately three hours, Nixon surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody.

Investigation and Mental Health Concerns

Inside the apartment, police found Broyld’s body on the couch. The Medical Examiner later identified ten gunshot wounds to her chest and abdomen.

Nixon’s mother told investigators that her son has struggled with mental health issues, including hallucinations. She also noted that he has access to “numerous firearms.” No motive for the killing has been disclosed at this time.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Broyld’s death and the events leading up to the standoff. Nixon remains in custody, facing second-degree murder charges.

This heartbreaking incident has left a void in the lives of Andrea Broyld’s loved ones and echoes the need for compassion and mental health support in our communities. In times of sorrow, we are reminded of John 14:27: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” May her family and friends find comfort and strength in this difficult time.
