🌲 Dorset to Nevis: A Scenic Ride Through the Woods

The five-mile stretch from Dorset to Nevis is a delightful ride through the woods, with occasional glimpses of pristine ponds. Pines and poplar trees abound, while birch trees stand out beautifully against the lush green background. Just before reaching Nevis, take in the stunning views of Shallow and Belle Taine Lakes as you cross the channel that connects the two. Don’t forget to stop for a selfie with the World’s Largest Muskie statue!

🐟 Nevis to Akeley: Discovering Unique Attractions

In Nevis, you’ll find a rest area with water and restrooms, as well as a statue of the World’s Largest Tiger Muskie. As you continue on to Akeley, be sure to stop and sit in Paul Bunyan’s hand for a memorable photo opportunity.

🌳 Akeley to Walker: Connecting with the Paul Bunyan Trail

From just northeast of Akeley to Walker, the Heartland Trail and the Paul Bunyan Trail share a segment. At a parking lot a few miles outside of Akeley, riders can turn onto the Paul Bunyan Trail and ride through the Chippewa National Forest. This eight-mile segment, built on former logging roads turned trails, features a grade of up to 8 percent and connects to the Shingobee Connection Trail into Walker.

Alternatively, you can continue on the shared segment to access the town of Walker directly. Just outside of town, the Paul Bunyan and Heartland Trails part ways, with the Paul Bunyan Trail continuing northwest to Bemidji and the Heartland Trail heading northeast to Cass Lake.

🚴‍♂️ Walker to Cass Lake: Riding Along Leech Lake

North of Walker, you’ll need to ride two miles on a paved road shoulder to transition from one section of the trail to the other. The trail skirts the west side of Leech Lake, then cuts through woods and marshland, paralleling Highway 371 for 10 miles to Cass Lake. At mile 41, you’ll cross a large steel bridge that once carried trains across the Steamboat River.

🔗 Connections and Future Expansions

The Heartland State Trail offers several connections to other trails in the area. In Walker, you can connect to the Shingobee Trail near Chase on the Lake Resort. This seven-mile combination of road routes and standalone trail crosses Shingobee Bay on the south end of Leech Lake and leads to the Paul Bunyan Trail. From there, you can head south toward Hackensack or west through the Chippewa National Forest, looping back to Walker via the Heartland/Paul Bunyan Trail.

Near Cass Lake, where the trail intersects with County Road 76, you can connect with the Mi-Gi-Zi Trail by riding about half a mile east on a signed road route. Follow the 14-mile trail counterclockwise around the beautiful shores of Pike Bay and through the Chippewa National Forest, arriving at a trailhead north of Pike Bay after about ten miles. From there, a signed bike route will guide you back to the Heartland Trail on quiet city streets through Cass Lake.

Future expansions of the Heartland State Trail include a 20-mile extension north from Park Rapids to Itasca State Park and an 86-mile segment from Park Rapids west to Moorhead. Of this segment, about five miles are already paved, running northwest from Frazee to connect with existing trails in Detroit Lakes.
