Thomas Abraham-James, the CEO of Pulsar Helium, shared the excitement of the moment when the drill hit the jackpot at 2,200 feet below the surface. The helium concentration measured a whopping 12.4%, which is way above the usual and about 30 times what’s considered standard for commercial use.
He described the find as something out of a dream, absolutely perfect.
The U.S. used to be the top dog in helium exports, but those days are gone. Now, with reserves running low, the hunt for helium has gone global. Before hitting the jackpot in northern Minnesota, Abraham-James was in Tanzania, where they found helium, but not nearly as much. Russia and Qatar are also big players in the helium game.

It’s used as a super-cool coolant in MRI machines, which are crucial for medical diagnostics. Dr. Grant Larson from Hennepin Healthcare highlighted the importance of helium for their MRI machines and how a shortage could impact patient care.
