LIBERTY, MO – Trapped in freezing waters with time running out, a mother and her infant faced a terrifying ordeal this week. Emergency responders rescued a mother and her 6-month-old baby after their SUV rolled into an icy creek in Liberty, Missouri, on Tuesday, police said.

The Liberty Police Department and Fire Department responded to the scene and discovered the SUV partially submerged in the water. The vehicle was resting on its driver’s side, with the passenger side still above the waterline.

Officer Breaks Through Windshield to Rescue Occupants

An officer and an assistant fire chief approached the vehicle, but the ice gave way, submerging the officer up to his waist, police said.

The officer pressed forward, using a tool to break the windshield and access the driver. After freeing the driver, he crawled to the backseat, where the baby was secured in a car seat.
