STEVENS COUNTY, WA – In a quiet, wooded area near Colville, Washington, a sheriff’s deputy was led to an elderly man in need of rescue by an unlikely guide—his loyal dog. The 13-year-old rescue dog, Gita, played a critical role in saving her owner after he had fallen and injured his leg at his remote cabin.

A Mysterious Encounter on a Quiet Road

On September 25, Deputy Wright of the Stevens County Sheriff’s Office was on patrol when he encountered Gita lying in the middle of a rural road. With no houses visible nearby, the scene seemed strange, and the deputy attempted to get the dog into his vehicle, assuming her owner might be nearby. However, Gita refused to cooperate, hinting that something was wrong.

Uncertain of what was happening, Wright conducted a search of the surrounding area, checking homes within a mile radius, but he found no sign of Gita’s owner. Sensing that there might be more to the story, Wright returned to the dog, who had remained in the same spot on the road.

The Search for Gita’s Owner

When Wright approached Gita again, she darted off down a scarcely used, unmarked road. Following her lead, the deputy trailed her to a small, secluded cabin. Nearby, Wright found an 84-year-old man on the ground, calling for help. The man had fallen and sustained a leg injury, leaving him stranded for hours without assistance.

The elderly man, who also had pre-existing medical conditions requiring regular medication, was in serious need of help. Without Gita’s determined actions, he could have faced life-threatening consequences.

A Life-Saving Discovery Thanks to a Loyal Companion

The Stevens County Sheriff’s Office later praised the dog and the deputy for their efforts, noting that Gita’s loyalty played a direct role in saving her owner’s life. The office highlighted how the quick thinking of both the dog and Deputy Wright led to the man’s timely rescue.

This story serves as a powerful reminder of the bond between humans and their pets. Gita’s unwavering dedication to her owner turned her into a hero that day, ensuring that help arrived when it was needed most.
