INDIANAPOLIS, IN – A raging fire nearly claimed the life of an 84-year-old woman in Indianapolis, Indiana early Monday, but quick-acting firefighters pulled off a daring rescue just as her home teetered on the brink of total destruction. The blaze erupted before dawn, leaving little time to spare as flames devoured the structure on Windridge Drive.
Firefighters Race Against Time
The Indianapolis Fire Department received frantic 911 calls around 5 a.m., reporting a fierce fire, though confusion reigned as “none of the callers could provide an accurate address.”
Crews scrambled to pinpoint the location, eventually zeroing in on the engulfed house, where flames already consumed 80% of the building and roared from the rooftop.
Spotting a lone rear window as their only way in, firefighters breached the inferno.
Inside, they found the unconscious silver-haired survivor lying in bed, overcome by the chaos just yards away. Within a single minute, they whisked her out through the same window, handing her to teammates waiting in the smoky haze outside.
Closed Door Saves a Life
The fire department credits the woman’s survival to a simple habit: sleeping with her bedroom door shut.
“It was only 2 or 3 minutes after the woman was removed, that the roof collapsed into the room,” officials noted.
While the closed door blocked much of the deadly smoke, the attic above her burned ferociously, threatening imminent collapse.
Dramatic footage captured by the department reveals the heart-pounding scene—flames leaping skyward as the fragile woman was carried to safety, mere moments before her home caved in.
Critical Condition and a Tragic Loss
Transported to Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital, the rescued woman remains in critical condition, fighting to recover from her brush with death. She was the sole human occupant of the house, but sadly, one cat perished in the flames.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation as crews comb through the charred wreckage of the Windridge Drive residence. For now, the city breathes a sigh of relief that this perilous blaze didn’t claim more than it did.
