PASADENA, TX – Chaos erupted at a high school band competition in Texas when an 83-year-old man allegedly opened fire, injuring a 26-year-old, before brave parents tackled him to the ground. The swift response of these parents stopped what officials believe could have become a deadly mass shooting.
Dennis Erwin Brandl Jr., 83, now faces charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after the incident at the Texas Color Guard Circuit drum line competition, held at Pasadena Memorial High School.
Pasadena Police said Brandl entered through the schoolâs south side doors around 6 p.m. on Saturday and, within minutes, fired a small-caliber weapon. The single gunshot struck a 26-year-old man, who was rushed to the hospital in stable condition.
Parents Take Down the Shooter
As panic spread, a parent at the scene made a heroic move, tackling Brandl and wrestling the weapon away. Others joined in to help restrain him until police arrived. Pasadena Police credited these parents with preventing further bloodshed.
“A citizen tackled the male with the weapon and with the help of others, was able to disarm and detain the male until police arrived,” police confirmed.
The Pearland Independent School District praised the quick-thinking parents in a statement, acknowledging their courage in a moment of crisis.
“A potential tragedy was averted today at Pasadena Memorial High School thanks to the swift and courageous actions of a few Pearland High School parents,” the statement read.
“We are immensely grateful for the heroic actions of our parents. Their quick thinking and bravery prevented what could have been a devastating situation.”
Shooterâs Motivation Remains Disturbing
Brandl reportedly left his home in Spring, Texas, and ended up at the Pasadena school without a clear reason.
He allegedly told investigators that he believed someone was chasing him and feared for his and his wifeâs lives. Police are still working to determine why he targeted the high school event.
Brandl was transferred to the Harris County Jail and remains charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the bizarre and potentially deadly incident.
