BERKSHIRE COUNTY, MA – A 78-year-old man with dementia was rescued from the woods of Lee, Massachusetts, after becoming separated from his brother while hunting earlier this month. The rescue took place following a detailed search operation in difficult terrain.
The Search for the Missing Hunter
On December 3, the elderly hunter and his brother entered the woods around 6 a.m., with plans to reconvene before dusk. When the two did not meet as scheduled, the brother alerted authorities at approximately 3 p.m., reporting his sibling as missing.
The missing hunter did not have a cell phone but had a radio, which allowed him to stay in touch with rescuers intermittently. Despite this limited communication, his location remained unclear, prompting an extensive search.
A Coordinated Rescue Operation
Massachusetts State Police (MSP) mobilized their Air Wing’s Air 4 crew from the Lawrence Air Base to assist in the search. Using thermal imaging technology, the crew quickly located the hunter, despite the challenging conditions. A video shared by MSP shows the crew finding him “within minutes” of deploying the technology.
Ground searchers, guided by the Air 4 crew, navigated through rugged terrain and reached the hunter shortly after 8 p.m. By that time, the man had been in the woods for 15 hours, exposed to the elements. Fortunately, he was found safe, and no serious injuries were reported.
