PORT HUENEME, CA – A routine traffic stop turned into chaos in California when a suspect led police on a high-speed chase that ended in a crash, injured bystanders, and revealed a bizarre discovery— a stolen fire hydrant hidden inside the suspect’s vehicle!
Police Pursuit Ends in Collision
The Port Hueneme Police Department reported that officers attempted to pull over a black Cadillac Escalade for a traffic violation around 10:26 a.m. on Saturday.
Instead of stopping, the driver hit the gas, sparking a four-minute pursuit through the coastal city, located between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara.
As the chase unfolded, the Escalade slammed into another vehicle, leaving multiple people with minor injuries. Authorities did not disclose how many were hurt in the crash.
Suspect Tries to Run—But Police Use a Taser
The pursuit came to an abrupt end on the 3400 block of Kern Street, where the driver, identified as 33-year-old Juan Contreras, bailed from the SUV and attempted to escape on foot.
Officers quickly took action, using a Taser to subdue him after he allegedly resisted arrest.
Police soon uncovered that Contreras had an outstanding no-bail felony warrant tied to a probation violation for auto theft.
Fire Hydrant Found Inside the SUV
Adding to the chaos, police searching the vehicle made an unusual discovery—a stolen public fire hydrant inside the SUV.
How it got there and why remains a mystery, and authorities say the investigation is ongoing.
Two Suspects Still on the Run
Contreras wasn’t alone in the vehicle. A man and a woman also fled the scene and managed to evade capture. Police have not yet identified them.
Contreras now faces multiple felony charges, including felony evading, felony hit-and-run, and possession of stolen property, along with his existing auto theft-related warrant. He was transported to Ventura County Main Jail.
Police Seeking Information
Authorities are urging anyone with knowledge of the stolen hydrant or the whereabouts of the two fleeing suspects to come forward. Tips can be submitted anonymously.
