PLAINFIELD, CT – Connecticut State Police are seeking the public’s help identifying two suspects who used an electronic device to steal more than $50,000 from an ATM at a highway rest stop on Monday.

Police said troopers responded to a report of suspicious activity at the Interstate 395 northbound service plaza in Plainfield at around 11:11 a.m. Monday. The caller reported seeing a white male “tampering” with the ATM and looking into parked cars.

Troopers arrived to find a man fleeing toward a black BMW sport utility vehicle with Pennsylvania plates in the southbound service plaza. The BMW sped away southbound on I-395.

When troopers attempted to stop the BMW, items were thrown from the vehicle, including a backpack containing approximately $52,000 in $20 bills, a mobile hotspot and an iPhone.

Troopers did not pursue the BMW, which continued along the interstate at “a high rate of speed.” Investigators went back and reviewed surveillance footage from the rest stop, and saw the same BMW driving by the plaza at around 7:15 a.m. with at least two individuals inside.

Later, two white males, which police say were possibly the same two individuals seen in the BMW earlier but wearing different clothes, were seen entering the Northbound Exxon Mobile Gas Station at different times.

  1. Does anyone think that the 2 guys seen are the same person just with a disguise? Looks like the same hat, pants and shoes and the face looks the same. Both guys have the same laugh lines. Maybe they are just wearing a different shirts and some type of wig.
