Born on April 15, 1918 into a big, loving family in North Minneapolis, Hilda’s early life was a mix of music, education, and a dream that led her far from home. She didn’t just dream of the stage; she conquered it, becoming a household name for her role in the groundbreaking all-Black Broadway show, Anna Lucasta.
But Hilda’s path wasn’t a walk in the park. She faced the harsh realities of racial discrimination in an industry that offered limited opportunities for Black actors. Not one to sit back, Hilda took her fight off the stage and into the halls of the New York State Human Rights Commission, where she worked tirelessly to open doors for others like her.
Her journey began in the heart of Minnesota, where her talents were nurtured by a supportive community. Despite financial hurdles, Hilda pursued higher education, first aiming for a degree in English and then finding her true calling in acting. Her move to New York City marked the start of an era, joining the American Negro Theater and eventually landing the lead role in Anna Lucasta, a play that challenged societal norms and celebrated the depth of Black talent on Broadway.
